Which is a better espresso machine, a Pasquini Livia 90 or an Expobar Brewtus II?
If you have the extra money to spend, the Expobar is going to provide more consistent espresso.
There is a big difference between these two machines - the Pasquini Livia 90 is a heat-exchanger, meaning it has only a single boiler with a heat exchanger. In order to pull a quality shot, you have to run a "cooling flush" of several ounces, wait a bit (based on your experience), then pull your shot. There is a learning curve and consistency isn't achieved without experience.
The Expobar is the lowest priced dual boiler system - meaning it has a dedicated brew boiler and a dedicated steam boiler. This means your temperature control is dramatically increased. With a dual boiler system, you do need to do a "warming flush" to simply ensure your entire brew group is up to temperature. There is no waiting after the flush, you can immediately pull your shot. This method provides much more consistency with temperature control. This is the reason I am getting an Expobar - when my fiance wants an espresso or my parents come into town and I'm not out of bed yet, they don't need a long learning curve to be able to pull a good shot for themselves.
With all that said, I believe it is generally believed that the Pasquini has stronger steam with the stock steam tips. When you replace the Expobar single-hole tip with a 2-hole tip from WholeLatteLove.com, you halve your steaming time, negating this comparison.
The Pasquini is certainly a good product. If you have experience with a heat exchanger (HX) machine and have already gone through the learning curve an HX machine requires, then your decision may go the other way, as the Pasquini is certainly less expensive since it only has a single boiler.
Please keep in mind that you absolutely MUST get a good quality grinder with either machine or your results will most definitely be dissappointing. A grinder like the Mazzer Mini is considered to be a great match for both of these machines and will last mostly likely forever.
Good luck in your decision!
